How do I use Jira Cloud issues to draft my announcement?

Use Jira issues or filters to generate announcement drafts with Smart Draft.

Written by Chelsea Davis

Summary

Smart Draft can pull in Jira issues as context to help generate your announcement. Once your Atlassian account is connected, you can search for individual issues or start from a saved Jira filter — then let Smart Draft do the writing.

Steps

Connect your Atlassian account

Before you can use Jira with Smart Draft, you'll need to connect your Atlassian account. This is a per-user connection, so each team member will need to complete this step for their own account.

Option 1: Connect from Smart Draft

  1. Click Announcements > Smart draft button.

  2. Click + Add context.

  3. Select Jira from the menu.

  4. Click Connect next to Jira and follow the prompts to authorize your Atlassian account.

Option 2: Connect from User Preferences

  1. Click your avatar or profile icon and go to User Preferences.

  2. Select the Connected accounts tab.

  3. Under Atlassian, click Connect and follow the prompts.

Add Jira issues to your draft

Once your account is connected:

  1. Click Announcements > Smart draft button

  2. In the text field, describe what you're announcing like what's changing, who it's for, and why it matters.

  3. Click + Add context and select Jira.

  4. Choose how you want to find issues:

    • Start from a Jira filter — Filters will show up in 2 ways:

      • Any filter your favorite

      • Any filter you own

    • Search for issues — Type a keyword to search across your Jira projects, then check the boxes next to the issues you want to include.

  5. Select the Jira issues you want to include and click add issues in the bottom right.

  6. Optional: Check Include links to add the Jira issue URLs directly to your announcement.

  7. Click Create draft to generate your announcement.

Notes & important info

  • This is a per-user connection. Each team member must connect their own Atlassian account — there is no workspace-level Jira connection for Smart Draft.

  • Include links adds the linked Jira issues to your announcement's right-hand sidebar, making it easy for readers to reference the underlying work. This is especially helpful for internal pages to your team.

  • Confluence integration is coming soon. You'll see it listed in the Add context menu, but it isn't available yet.

Troubleshooting

  • Jira shows "Connect" in the menu — Your Atlassian account isn't linked yet. Click Connect and complete the authorization flow.

  • Can't find the Jira filter you're looking for — Only your Favorited filters appear in Smart Draft. Open Jira, favorite the filter, then return to Smart Draft.

  • The integration only works with Jira Cloud.

  • Issues aren't showing up in search — You either do not own any Filters or have no favorited any filters. You can favorite filters in Jira by clicking the star icon.
